You will need to add water periodically. The water will gradually evaporate and the pump will no longer be submerged completely. The water line should always be high enough to completely cover the pump. If the pump begins making a sputtering noise, you will know to add more water, BUT you should make a habit of filling the fountain BEFORE the pump makes noise. Before refilling, turn your fountain off and allow the water to drain from the fountain top back into the bowl. If you do not wait for the water to fall back down into the bowl before refilling, you may overfill the fountain and cause spillage.
Clean the fountain as it becomes dirty. Regularly changing the water (weekly) will help to keep the fountain cleaner, longer. Keeping the water clean prevents the water from becoming sticky and from forming microorganisms. An algicide or humidifier treatment can also be helpful. Direct sunlight will encourage growth of microorganisms, so it is best to keep the fountain out of direct sunlight.
