Fountain is very pretty, looks great in our mini japanese garden. However... It would be nice if the solar energy would build up, the way our solar lights do. Not sure if it is a defect, but the fountain only actually runs when the sun is beating down on it. It is in a spot that gets the most sun, but it takes a lot of really bright hot sun for it to work. Most of the time it just sits there, still. For [$], it is a bit of a disappointment.

I use the fountain on my northwest corner of my backyard, for feng shui purposes. I though I would create a small zen garden for myself but found that without the sun there is no zen. Can't be enjoyed on a cloudy or partly cloudy day or when the clouds are rolling by.

This fountain, though described as being constructed of "slate material" was better than described. It is fiberglass reinforced slate material. Very rugged and tough yet pleasing to the eye[...]fountain functions exactly as described. I chose not to use the diffuser nozzle on top. Now the water gently bubbles our, resembling larger fountains. No nozzle also means less evaporation of water, thus fewer refills.I purchased the fountain for my newly constructed rock garden, which is shaded in the morning and in direct sun in the afternoon. The rocks range in size from boulders to sub-pea sized washed river rock gravel. I followed the lead of one of the previous reviewers and put some the prettier stones in the bottom of each layer. I plan to build a tiered stone pedestal for it today. Ourprogress can be followed on my web page at [@]

Make sure your surface is level and gets direct overhead sun during the time of day you would enjoy the fountain before you buy.

On the plus side, it's nice looking, it's one of the biggest solar fountains, and it has a unique and interesting flow pattern.

Q1: We like the zen three tier solar step fountain but were wondering two things: does it store energy in a battery so that it can also run at night and does it have an on/off switch?

A: This solar fountain does not store energy. It requires the direct sunlight to operate the pump. There is no on/off switch for the fountain.

Q2: How far can the solar panel be from the fountain?

A: The solar panel is located on the very top of the fountain so it will need to be placed in direct sunlight to operate.

Q3: If there's NO direct sunlight (shadow) does it still work? What is the total height of the fountain? Thank you, Ted

A: If there is no direct sunlight the fountain will not work. The overall height is 9 inches.

Q4: Does the pump automatically shut off if the fountain runs dry?

A: There is not an automatic shut off on the fountain if the water runs dry.

Q5: Can Smart Solar fountains be plugged in to house current?

A: At this time there is not an AC adapter.
