Two Types of Copper to Care For Copper water fountains require slightly different care than other fountains. Always refer first to your owner's manual as different fountains have different needs. Concerning care and cleaning, there are two types of copper fountains: those with a clear coat and those without. Copper With a Clear Coat Your copper fountain may have a clear coat to keep the copper color vibrant and shiny. If this is the case, you will need to wax the copper finish with a hard-shell wax every few months. For daily cleaning, you can use a furniture polish with a soft cloth. Do not let the polish get into the water. | ![]() |
Build Up on a Clear Coat
A copper cleaner will damage the finish on your coated copper fountain. Mineral build up can occur, especially if you use tap water instead of a distilled water in your fountain, and when it does you can use a calcium and lime remover. Follow the instructions carefully and do not contaminate your water.
Copper Without a Clear Coat
Copper water fountains that are unfinished need completely different care. Waxing is not recommended and you should clean it with a wood polish; yes, a wood polish such as Pledge. Again, any product you use to clean the copper should never be allowed to get into your water.
The Patina Protects the Copper
Copper is a metal that forms a patina, which is a natural greenish tint that results from natural oxidation. Picture the Statue of Liberty. The patina protects the copper and gives your copper water fountain its own unique, weathered appearance. Do not use a calcium and lime remover on unfinished copper.
For Copper-Colored Copper
If you do not want the patina, you can periodically clean the copper with a very fine sandpaper and a copper cleaner such as Bar Keeper's Friend. Afterwards, spray WD-40 on a soft cloth and wipe the copper clean. No matter your preference, with proper care, you will enjoy your copper fountain for years to come.
